You're posting the same quality content you always have, but your reach has plummeted. Likes are down, new followers have dried up, and your posts don't seem to be showing up for people who don't already follow you. You might be experiencing what's commonly called a "shadowban".

What is a shadowban?

A shadowban is an informal term for when Instagram restricts the distribution of your content without explicitly notifying you. Your posts still appear on your profile and to your existing followers, but they're significantly suppressed in hashtag searches, the Explore page, and Reels recommendations. You're effectively posting to a smaller audience without knowing it.

Instagram has officially acknowledged that it limits the distribution of certain content, though it doesn't use the term "shadowban" itself. The company refers to it as "content recommendation restrictions".

Common causes

  • Using banned or restricted hashtags β€” some hashtags have been flagged for spam or inappropriate content. Using them in your posts can suppress your reach
  • Sudden spikes in activity β€” following/unfollowing hundreds of accounts in a short time, liking too many posts rapidly, or sending bulk DMs triggers spam detection
  • Using automation tools β€” bots and scheduling tools that interact with Instagram's API in unauthorized ways are a fast path to restrictions
  • Reported content β€” if multiple users report your posts, Instagram may restrict your reach even if the reports are unfounded
  • Terms of Service violations β€” even minor violations can result in reach restrictions

How to check if you're shadowbanned

The most reliable method is to post a piece of content with a hashtag that isn't too popular (something with under 100k posts), then ask someone who doesn't follow you to search for that hashtag and look for your post. If it doesn't appear, your reach is being restricted.

You can also check your account's Insights β†’ reach from non-followers. A sudden significant drop (50%+ in a short period) with no obvious explanation is a strong indicator.

⚠️ Third-party shadowban checkers

Be cautious with websites that claim to "check your shadowban status" β€” many of them require your Instagram login, which is a phishing risk. The manual method above is safer and more reliable.

How to fix it

Stop all automation immediately

If you're using any third-party tools that interact with Instagram on your behalf, disconnect them all. Go to Settings β†’ Security β†’ Apps and websites and revoke their access. Then take a break from all unusual activity.

Take a 48–72 hour break

For minor restrictions, a short pause from posting and unusual activity is often enough to reset the algorithm's flagging. Don't post, don't use bots, don't do mass follows or unfollows.

Audit your hashtags

Search each hashtag you regularly use. If a hashtag shows a notice like "Recent posts for [hashtag] are currently hidden" or shows no recent posts despite being popular, it's restricted. Remove it from your rotation.

Switch to original audio on Reels

Using copyrighted music that Instagram hasn't licensed can suppress Reel distribution. Use Instagram's licensed music library or original audio to avoid this issue.

Submit a review

If you believe the restriction is unjustified, go to Settings β†’ Help β†’ Report a problem. Document your case clearly. Results aren't guaranteed, but for legitimate accounts it sometimes accelerates the restoration of normal reach.

πŸ’‘ Prevention is easier than recovery

The best shadowban strategy is never getting one. Post consistently, avoid automation, use relevant hashtags in normal quantities (5–10 per post, not 30), and engage authentically. These habits keep your account in good standing with the algorithm long-term.
